Chapter 6 icon - The Gospel Road

Be encouraged by understanding how you can live a meaningful, loving life starting today

AS YOU begin your new life as a follower of Jesus you will encounter many new thoughts and methods of handling temptations, trials and decisions.  Each day has the potential to strengthen your relationship with God so that you will understand more clearly that you are actually His son or His daughter.  Each person’s journey along the path to heaven is unique. God will direct your path according to the priorities that will be of the most benefit to you and those you influence.  Through the experience of walking with Jesus through life’s trials, your character will grow and mature, just as a planted kernel of corn grows and matures and bears fruit when it is planted in good soil and watered. 94

To be successful, you will need to focus on the life of Jesus each day.  As you seek to know God with all of your heart and mind and strength, you will be rewarded with glimpses of who God is.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, you will be able to love God above all else and to love not only your friendly neighbors, but also your enemies.  If you start to become discouraged or tired, look up to heaven and ask God to remind you about the life and sacrifice of Jesus; ask for strength and courage to continue to be a faithful follower. 95
Jesus has love that is far above any type of love we have ever experienced here on Earth. Becoming loving like Jesus is something you can look forward to in your fulfilling and meaningful new life.  Let us now consider some aspects of Jesus’ love. He has love that… 96
continues even though it is unappreciated and rejected.
continues in the middle of painful or distressing circumstances.
proceeds from a tender, sensitive heart.
desires us to have success even though we made huge mistakes in the past.
is supportive and not jealous of other loving relationships we have.
is humble, that does not boast about how superior His love is compared to our love.
is appropriate for each occasion – always pure and modest.
is free from all selfishness and is focused on doing good for others to promote their happiness.
is not easily provoked or irritated by other people’s inappropriate words, thoughts or actions.
focuses on our positive traits of character and is not eager to find our faults.
rejoices with us when our character is being transformed to be like Jesus.
takes on our burdens.
is hopeful – that never gives up on us in our lifetime.
endures all hardships and suffering so that we can live together as a family in the future.
never fails under any circumstance. 97
By thinking about the life and love of Jesus each day and seeking to become like Jesus through the divine power that God is eager to give you through the Holy Spirit, you will become like Jesus and this change will bring peace to your heart. Please remember that you will not be able to become like Jesus by trying to be like Jesus in your own strength – if this was possible you would then become proud like Lucifer. Your new life as a follower of Jesus focuses on the power and strength of God. You will be successful as you have faith in God’s promises to change you to become like Jesus. This faith is a gift from God, so be sure to ask for it and believe that God is eager to provide it. This change occurs through the power of the Holy Spirit in cooperation with your willing consent and God-blessed effort. 98
At the end of this section you will find a number of promises from God’s word, the Bible, which will encourage you each day in your new pursuit of becoming like Jesus – in word, thought, action and motive. Store these promises in your mind so that you will never forget them. If you are fortunate enough to have a Bible, you are very blessed to have all of His word – treasure this gift and share it with others. If you do not have access to a Bible, praise God for the portions of the Bible that are found in this presentation and patiently make a request of God to provide you with a complete Bible. 99
Ask God to help you understand what other people need and He will help you truly love your neighbors. God is the creator of every good thing and that includes the gift of hospitality. What a joy it is to consider what another person needs – could they use an encouraging word, a cup of cold water, a lovingly prepared meal, a coat, some new shoes, a prayer for their family’s needs, a text from the Bible, or a presentation about the gospel? 100
Consider what you would want if you were able to trade places with the person you would like to help. One of the reasons Jesus rescued us from death is because that is what He would have wanted if He had been in our place – if our circumstances were reversed. 101
God expects us to be motivated to help others because of the gratitude we have in our hearts for all that He has done for us. As children of His family, we now desire to act as God does – we want to be a blessing to others. God is very generous and has promised to reward us for all the good things we do for Him through His power, but God will never provide us with a reward that will make us proud. We are not rewarded because we deserve it; we are simply doing what a member of God’s family is expected to do. One of our greatest rewards will be meeting people in Heaven that we have helped spiritually or physically when we lived on Earth. 102
As you start your new life with God you will encounter challenges and receive many blessings. Following are a few helpful tips as you walk with God along His narrow pathway to Heaven:
  • As God guides you each day, you will be blessed with tokens of His love for you – you can also expect to be confronted with trials and difficult decisions. These trials and decisions are God’s method of helping your character to grow and mature. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn more about God’s wisdom and power and therefore you should praise God when you are confronted with difficulties. As you gain experience trusting in God’s path, your thoughts and feelings will change and you will become more and more like Jesus. You will still have your own unique personality, and yet you will desire to have words, thoughts, and actions like Jesus. This process, of becoming more and more like Jesus, will continue as long as you are here on this Earth. The follower of Jesus who becomes as trusting and loving as a little innocent child, who is truly converted and follows God with their whole heart, will grow up to be like Jesus through a productive learning process of continual obedience that is motivated by love. As our example, Jesus learned from the trials He experienced on Earth, and yet He did not learn by sinning, He learned by being obedient to God the Father.  103
  • If you are intentionally disregarding any known command of God, then you are disobedient as Adam and Eve were and you have not yet fully surrendered your will to God – you are not yet converted as a trusting, humble child of God. If this is your situation, pray earnestly to God to help you and let Him know that you would like His powerful help to surrender each decision to His perfect counsel. It is not safe to hold back any decision from God’s counsel – we must surrender all to God if we are to be in His complete care. Anything less than a complete surrender means that we still do not trust God and feel that we know better than God does for certain decisions. We would do well to remember that an incomplete surrender caused Eve and Adam to sin against God. If you do sin – if you turn away from God’s path and follow Lucifer’s temptations or an old habit – turn back to God quickly and repent of your sin and ask for His forgiveness. God will always be there to help you get back onto the narrow path that leads to Heaven – as your loving Father, He will never leave you or forsake you.  104
  • Please do not become discouraged if you find yourself thinking thoughts or words that are not from God.  Realize that these are either habits from your old life or temptations. Ask God to help you think about something else like one of your favorite Bible verses, or something you appreciate about the life of Jesus, or things you will enjoy about Heaven, or a spiritual song. If you are used to speaking and acting impulsively, ask God to help you speak and act thoughtfully, seeking His guidance. When you consistently look to God for help in every small trial and decision, then God will know that you will trust Him when you encounter large decisions.  105
  • When you need help making a decision, ask God what Jesus would do and remember that as we study and consider the life of Jesus, we will become more and more like Him. If you ask God to help you overcome any sin, His answer will always be “I am right here to help you.” He will also expect you to work together with Him through the exercise of your power of choice – ask God to help you to be willing to choose the right path. For requests other than overcoming sin, you may not always receive the answer quickly; sometimes God would like you to patiently wait for His answer, and sometimes He will provide you with the answer when you get to Heaven. God’s timing and plan is perfect, He knows what is best – we are to trust God as a child completely trusts a loving parent. One of the lessons you will learn from experiencing many trials is that God can always be trusted, even when you don’t understand His purpose or plan. For example, there are prayers for physical healing that God answers quickly; and there are also times we may need to patiently wait until Heaven to be healed. Our part is to ask our request with faith and believe that our loving Father will provide the help we need in His perfect timing and according to His perfect will. We are to trust in His love, as well as His power and wisdom, and we are to leave the result of our prayer request in God’s care.  106
  • Salvation is not like any other gift – it is a gift that was made available to you through the most painful sacrifice ever made. Please do not let this sacrifice go to waste. If you have led a sinful life and feel that you are unworthy to accept God’s gift of salvation; you are right that you are so unworthy – and yet an even worse decision would be to not accept this gift God is offering you at an infinite cost to Himself and His Son. God offers you this precious gift because He wants you to accept it – trust that His plan for you is best. You may have caused Him tremendous pain by your previous life of sin; please do not continue to cause Him pain by refusing His gift of salvation – accept His gift now, turn away from your sins and apologize to God and ask for a new life with Jesus at your side. Jesus and God are waiting to forgive you completely, not as man forgives, but as God can only forgive.  107
  • Even if you are very young or if you are nearing the end of your life – today is the best day to become a follower of Jesus. Please surrender everything to God today, trust in His gift of salvation and begin living a new life with Jesus right now – you will never regret this decision. Are you weak? Ask God to give you strength. Are you discouraged because of your previous choices? Ask God to encourage you with His peace and forgiveness – and as a special favor, ask Him to help you understand how much He loves you and wants you to live forever with Him in Heaven.  108
  • Through the power of God, never give up! As a new Christian, you are inexperienced and will encounter many new challenges. Even when you don’t understand the events of life, even when you are discouraged by your own failures – realize that God loves you and will always continue to be right by your side. Ask God to give you faith in His love for you and look forward to that day that is coming very soon when you will join Jesus in Heaven. Keep looking up!  109

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?” Matthew 5:43-47

“We love him, because he first loved us.” I John 4:19
97 - Return
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” I Corinthians 13:1-13
98 - Return

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” James 1:22-25

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” John 14:15-18

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” Isaiah 40:8

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matthew 24:35
100 - Return
“Use hospitality one to another without grudging.” I Peter 4:9

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.” Romans 12:10-13

“Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:1-2

“Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:34-40

For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:43-48

“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:12

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:2-5

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:3-8

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:21-23

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15

“For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Matthew 12:50

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” I John 2:15-17

“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
