Find out about the rescue plan to save the human race from permanent destruction

GOD had clearly stated to Adam and Eve that the penalty for not following His law would be death. As we study the results of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, and as we consider God’s perfect judgment and His mercy, we will begin to understand how devastating sin is – even one sin.  19

Following the sin of Adam and Eve, a number of disturbing events took place.
  • For the first time, Adam and Eve appeared to each other to be without clothing. They were embarrassed and looked for a way to cover themselves. In the future, when the followers of God are reunited in Heaven, each member of God’s family will receive a robe of white light that will modestly cover their body. This robe is a symbol of God’s purity. Adam and Eve were no longer pure, they had both committed treason against their Creator by believing the word of the Creator’s enemy.  20
  • Adam and Eve were created to be loving, thoughtful and giving. Following their first sin, their tendency was to be selfish instead of loving. After their first sin, Adam blamed Eve for tempting him to sin, and Eve blamed the serpent. Their first sin of distrusting God led to another sin of blaming each other and that has resulted in an abundance of sin in our world today. Sin is like a contagious disease that can destroy the sinner and has the potential to destroy the sinner’s children who inherit selfish character traits from their parents.  21
  • Our first parents were no longer allowed to live in the Garden of Eden. A pair of angels now guarded the entrance to the garden to prevent them from entering. In this garden was a tree called the “Tree of Life.” This tree was created to give Adam and Eve ongoing life as long as they ate from its fruit. Adam’s penalty for sin was not immediate death; however, he did eventually die at the age of 930 years and he did witness the horrible results of his sin during his life.  22
  • Cain and Abel were the first two sons of Adam and Eve. Cain made the decision to follow Lucifer and Abel decided to follow God and His instructions. Cain became irritated by Abel’s decision to obey God and became so angry with Abel that he murdered him. Since this event, many of God’s faithful followers have also been killed for their belief in God. Imagine the extreme sorrow this caused Adam and Eve; knowing that they were responsible for bringing sin into this world. In the future, when the whole universe trusts in God, there will be no murder – there will be no war and no death, no hatred and no anger.  23
After Adam and Eve sinned, God put into action an amazing rescue plan that He had considered long ago. This plan would have many positive results – it would rescue human beings from the devastation of this Earth and restore them physically, spiritually, and emotionally. God’s plan would also forever settle the question of how loving and just God is.  24
There is no greater expression of love than for an innocent person to give their own life so that another guilty person might live. And yet, this is what our Creator has done for each of us – and much more. He is not only innocent and without sin, He is our Creator and our original King and provider. When God’s rescue plan is understood and accepted, we have real hope – hope that our character can be changed to become like our Creator’s and that we can live again forever after this life on Earth has ended. Following are more details of how and when this plan took place.  25
The history of Earth as described in the Bible goes back about 6,000 years. At the beginning of this time period Adam and Eve were created. Following Adam and Eve’s sin, God provided a symbol that represented what would happen to the Son of God in the future. This symbol was put in place to help us to not only realize the absolute devastation that sin causes, but to also give us hope that God would provide a solution to the problem of sin and death.  26
The symbol that God chose to represent the Son of God was an innocent lamb that was without any physical defects. This lamb had not hurt anyone – it was truly innocent, and yet its life was taken – it was put to death. This horrible symbol represented what would happen to the Son of God in the future when He came to Earth and paid our penalty for being disobedient to God’s law with His own life. This symbol revealed the unchanging, perfect law of God and began to show humans just how destructive sin is.  27
It causes God pain when any animal is injured or dies, and the same was true for this symbolic ceremony of a lamb dying. And yet the repulsive death of an innocent created animal faintly compares to the suffering and death of the innocent divine Creator of all things, who is the Ruler and Lawgiver of the universe, and who took our penalty so that we might have the opportunity to once again live forever in peace.  28
About 4,000 years after Adam and Eve were created, God put in place the next major phase of His rescue plan. The plan to save humans from destruction was critical – no mistakes could be made; this was one of the reasons the mission was entrusted to God Himself. The members of the divine family all agreed that the Son of God would be the one who would come to Earth as a human being and live among us. God the Father, as the divine Judge of the universe, had the authority to accept His only Son as our substitute; taking our penalty for the sins we have committed against God. 29
The Son of God would come to Earth to perfectly reveal what God is like so that we would have a perfect example to follow. His name on Earth would be “Jesus” – which was a name that referred to the belief that God was the One who would save us from our sins. Like Adam, He would have the freedom of choice to follow His Father’s instructions or to sin. He would also be referred to as the “Christ” – which means that He was the Son of God the Father. And He would be referred to as our “Lord” – which means our Master; the One we follow and learn from.  30
A few more glimpses into the life of Jesus – the visible God.
Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, some of God’s followers known as prophets recorded messages that shared many details regarding the future life of Jesus. These messages are meant to convince us that this supernatural event was planned in advance by the one true God who knows the future as clearly as the past. 31
  • He would be born before the tribe of Judah would lose their right to rule.
  • He would be born of a virgin in the city of Bethlehem Ephratah and one of His names (Immanuel) would signify that He is God.
  • He would be One who has always existed.
  • Even though He would be born as a child, He would be called “the Mighty God” signifying His divine character.
  • People would not be attracted to Him because of His physical appearance.
  • Many people would despise and reject Him on Earth, causing Him to be a man of sorrows who was familiar with grief.
  • He would take on the penalty that we deserve for sinning against God even though He was completely innocent.
  • His public ministry would last 3 ½ years and His death would put an end to the symbolic sanctuary service because the event that the symbolic service pointed to would come to pass.
  • His feet and His hands would be pierced when He was killed.
  • Even though He would be killed, He would be raised to life again. 32
Unlike Adam, Jesus came to Earth as a baby. Out of all the people on Earth, God selected a woman named Mary to be his mother; His stepfather was a man named Joseph. Mary was a virgin at the time of Jesus’ birth. The Holy Spirit miraculously created Jesus inside Mary’s womb.  33
“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”  Luke 1:35
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”  Matthew 1:18
“For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.”  Isaiah 53:2
Very few details are mentioned in the Bible about the first 30 years of Jesus’ life. We know that He was born in the city of Bethlehem Ephratah in a place that gave shelter to animals (since there was no regular lodging available). Similar to an unblemished lamb, Jesus did not have any birth defects, birthmarks, or blemishes. Angels from heaven who were watching the scene from the sky announced His birth to a group of shepherds who were watching over their flocks. These shepherds traveled to where Jesus was born and worshiped Him as their God and future King. Wise men from a region east of Jerusalem traveled to find Jesus based on a prophecy they had read and were directed by a special star on their journey. When they found Jesus, they worshiped Him as God and presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Him.  34
After the wise men visited Jesus and His family, an angel instructed Joseph to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt in order to protect Him from being destroyed by the current ruler named Herod. After Herod died, an angel instructed Joseph to return to the land of Israel. Joseph settled in a city called Nazareth in the region of Galilee – this is where Jesus grew up. His parents were poor in earthly goods, but rich in spiritual knowledge. Jesus learned the trade of a carpenter from His stepfather Joseph. Jesus remained with His family in Nazareth until He was thirty years old.  35
Jesus was related to Abraham and to King David through His mother Mary. His stepfather Joseph was also related to Abraham and King David. There were 14 generations that passed from the time of Abraham to King David. There were another 14 generations that passed from the time of King David until the Israelites were taken captive and made slaves in Babylon; and then another 14 generations until Jesus was born.  36
When Jesus was 30 years old He left Nazareth and began the public phase of His ministry which lasted 3 ½ years. At the beginning of His ministry He asked His cousin, John the Baptist, to baptize Him in the Jordan River as an example for His followers. Baptism by full immersion in water symbolizes the new birth as a follower of Jesus; our old life is buried in the water and we rise out of the water to live a new life – the life of Jesus our Master.  37
After His baptism, Jesus endured a series of very hard temptations by Lucifer that were to prepare Him for His public ministry and provide Him with the personal knowledge and experience that would enable Him to deliver us from any temptation to sin. His first temptation involved the control of appetite and distrusting God, the same temptations that caused Adam and Eve to sin. The second temptation was about presumption, which is a false version of true faith in God. Some examples of presumption are: placing ourselves in a dangerous situation (either physically, spiritually, mentally or emotionally) that God has not directed us to be in; or expecting God to protect us from a dangerous situation that we placed ourselves in without His guidance. We may also presume that we can be saved in His Kingdom based on our own ideas instead of God’s rescue plan. If we know what God’s instructions are but do not follow them because we don’t believe God is powerful and loving enough to help us follow His instructions, this is also presumption. His third temptation involved pride and selfishness, which is the source of all sin and which was the sin that caused Lucifer’s downfall.  38
Jesus’ example reveals to us that when we are tempted to sin, we are to trust that what God has told us in the Bible is true and we must trust that God will take perfect care of us. We need to ask for God’s power to overcome any sin; because we are not strong enough to overcome sin by our own strength. Through the power that God wants to give us, we can surrender our will to Him and ask that He will help us to have the same character that Jesus had. We can each become a person who loves God above all and who humbly considers others to be greater than themselves.  39
After Jesus successfully resisted the temptations from Lucifer, He called twelve men to follow Him in His public ministry so that they would be witnesses to His experiences and be able to share them with many others. Some of these men were fishermen; which was a common occupation in the region where Jesus traveled. These blessed followers of Jesus personally traveled and ate with Him. In the future, His disciples would be severely persecuted and some would be killed because of their faith in Jesus and for sharing what they knew about Him. Jesus’ ministry was also supported by many other followers and by women such as Mary and Martha – the sisters of Lazarus.  40
Jesus traveled about the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and preaching the good news about the Kingdom of God, and healing people of their sicknesses and diseases. Jesus became a very well-known person throughout Syria. Wherever Jesus went, great multitudes of people followed Him and brought Him sick people so that He could heal them. Some people followed Jesus because they were interested in His teachings, others followed Him out of curiosity; some followed Him to gain personal benefit from His power, and still others were critical of Him and His teachings since, at times, their own beliefs were contrary to what Jesus taught.  41
Jesus’ daily life was one that combined few physical comforts with abundant spiritual blessings. He typically ate the simple food that his humble followers ate. He did not have a home to call His own, so He relied on the hospitality of others to provide lodging or He slept under the stars. He wore simple but good quality clothing. While He had a perfect physical form, He did not appear to be a wealthy or important person. He was a servant to all as He counsels us to be.  42
It was common for Jesus to talk with His Father for long periods of time during the early morning hours and then in shorter messages throughout His day – this was the source of His strength and it is provided for us as well. Communicating with God is called prayer; it is a precious privilege. When any of us speak to God as a Friend and sincerely desire His help, He always hears us and is ready to help. God provides us with answers to our prayers that are for our best benefit. The followers of Jesus noticed how beautiful and meaningful His prayers were. One day they asked Jesus to teach them how to pray and He provided them with an example of a simple prayer that was similar to the following words:  43
Our Father who lives in Heaven – Your name is holy and we respect it above all other names.
We eagerly look forward to the time when You will reign again over Heaven and Earth and when every person and angel will be united in following Your will.
We ask today for the physical and spiritual bread and water You have promised us that will supply our needs.
Through Your influence, we desire to completely forgive those who have sinned against us and ask for Your forgiveness for any sin we have committed against You or any person.
We are also grateful for Your power and wisdom that leads us away from temptation and lets us know Your perfect will.
We praise You now and throughout eternity for being the Creator and Sustainer of Your Kingdom, for Your infinite power, and for Your glorious perfect character. We ask that You would help us give You all of the praise and all the glory for any good thing that we or others receive.  44
The greatest words ever spoken were spoken by Jesus. He blessed, encouraged and healed those who were outcast by society, and He also ministered to those who were wealthy. He cared equally for people from all cultures and backgrounds since He was the Creator of this world and loved each person individually as part of His own family. Following are just a few of the teachings of Jesus:  45
Repent of your sins because God’s heavenly Kingdom is very near and God wants all people to be saved – He wants each one of us to live with Him forever in His Kingdom.

People who hunger and thirst to receive the character of Jesus will be blessed because God will grant them their desire.

Those who are persecuted for having the character of Jesus will be blessed because they will end up living in the Kingdom of Heaven.

When people persecute you and say false things about you because you are a follower of Jesus – be glad! Rejoice because this shows that you are part of God’s family and you will be blessed by the great reward that God has waiting for you in Heaven.

Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which are hostile towards you and persecute you. Do this so that you can be the children of God the Father. For God blesses both His enemies and His friends with sunshine and with rain.

Do not gather earthly treasure for yourself because this treasure may be ruined or stolen. Instead, store up treasure in Heaven because this treasure will never be ruined or stolen. Remember that your heart will be focused where your treasure is located.

First, seek the Kingdom of God and the character of Jesus; then your food, water and clothing will be provided.

You will be judged by God according to the way you have judged other people.

Help other people in the same way you would like them to help you if your circumstances were exchanged with theirs.

Be sure to look for the narrow gate and the narrow road because many people are going through the wide gate and walking on the wide road that leads to destruction. Relatively few people will enter through the narrow gate and continue on the narrow way that leads to eternal life in God’s Kingdom.

Not everyone that calls Me their Master will enter the Kingdom of Heaven; but those who are actually doing the will of My Father will enter His Kingdom.

You are going to be hated by all those who hate Me, but let Me assure you that if you endure until the end, you will be saved.

If you are being persecuted because you follow Me, and you faithfully declare that you are My follower, I will confirm that you are part of My family in front of God the Father.

I consider any person who does the will of My Father in Heaven to be My brother, sister, or mother - they are truly part of My family.

There are people who tell others that they are followers of Jesus, but their actions reveal that they are not My followers. These people are not truly worshiping Me; they are teaching the commands of men instead of the commands of God.

What does it benefit a person if they gain tremendous wealth on this Earth, but lose eternal life? What can a man give in order to obtain eternal life? In the future, I will be coming back to Earth surrounded by angels and the glory of my Father. Then, I will reward every person according to what they have done in this life.

I tell you the truth when I say that unless you seek to know and do My Father’s will with all of your heart and become as humble and trusting as a little child, you will not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

I have come to save those who are currently lost and do not know the way to the Kingdom of Heaven.

My heavenly Father would like all people to be saved in His Kingdom.

The angels in Heaven have great joy when just one sinner on Earth repents of his sins.

Pay to the government what is due to the government, and give to God those things that are God’s.

The person who is faithful in the smallest issue is also faithful in large issues; and the person who is not just in the smallest issue is also unjust in larger issues.

Those who are servants to all who need help are the greatest people.

Watch out that you are not deceived in the end times of this Earth because many will come and pretend to be Jesus, but they are deceivers.

When I return to Earth to take my followers home to Heaven I will not be coming secretly to some location in the desert or to some other secret place. People from the east and from the west will publicly see My arrival to Earth at the same time just as people can see lightning from many directions.

In the end times of this Earth, people who are enemies of God will deliver you up to be persecuted and killed and you will be hated by people from every nation because you are a true follower of Jesus.

Sin will increase so much in the end times of this Earth that many people will no longer have love in their hearts.

When I come back to Earth as King, I will say to the people that I have placed on my right side, “Come, those who are blessed by my Father, inherit the heavenly Kingdom that was prepared for you before this Earth was created. You are being blessed because you gave food to those who were hungry, and water to those who were thirsty, and lodging to those who needed shelter, and clothing to those who were without, and you visited those who were in prison. Whenever you cared for the least important person on Earth, you were also caring for Me because each person is my child.”  46
The life of Jesus on Earth provides us with a perfect example. His life was a reflection of God the Father and the Holy Spirit. By studying His words, thoughts, and actions we can obtain a good idea who God is and why we can safely trust in His counsel and promises.  47
Many concepts that Jesus taught were considered to be radical and new since they were contrary to the popular teachings of His time. Jesus combined His teachings in perfect balance. While He made it clear that He had come to fulfill and make clear the holy law of God, He also swept away false man-made laws that were contrary to God’s perfect law. He made it plain that humans are only capable of truly observing the law of God through the power that God alone provides. False religions teach the idea that we can become good by our own efforts; however, this teaching leads to pride and selfishness – the two original sins of Lucifer. Only God’s method of spiritual healing, through His power combined with our consent and God-blessed effort, destroys pride. His way also causes us to give all the praise and glory to God for any success we have in our lives or that we see in the lives of others.  48
Jesus suffered from extreme persecution and His followers can also expect to be persecuted. We are not greater than our Master. During the time that Jesus lived on Earth, Lucifer tried his best to cause Jesus to sin so that God’s plan to rescue us would be destroyed. Let us be thankful that Jesus did not sin against His Father in Heaven on even one occasion. Therefore, Jesus did not have any guilt or penalty for sin placed upon Him – He was baptized as our example, but not for any sin that He had committed. He followed His Father’s guidance in every decision and never caused Him pain. He was pure even though He lived around sinners for over 30 years and was directly tempted by Lucifer to sin.  49
The majority of the religious leaders of Jesus’ time were not supportive of His ministry and did not always understand who He was or what His goals were because they were intent on maintaining their own man-made laws and traditions. The religious leaders thought that if Jesus gained further recognition and support, He might replace them. These leaders were influenced by Lucifer to conclude that it would be better to put Jesus to death than for them to lose their positions and authority. So, they planned to find a way to secretly arrest Jesus and put Him on trial for transgressing their laws. In the future, they would put pressure on the civil authorities to put Him to death because He was a person who caused unrest in society and because He was found to be guilty of death by the majority of the religious leaders.  50
Jesus was not surprised by the plans of the religious leaders. He told His followers in advance what would happen to Him. His followers had a difficult time understanding His words because they thought that Jesus was going to become their King on this Earth. They did not understand yet that He came to Earth for other reasons. For example:  51
  • He came to Earth to show us how a person can know and do God’s will.  52
“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”  John 6:38
“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”  I Peter 2:21
“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.”  John 15:10
  • Jesus came to learn very specifically how it feels to be tempted to sin as a human so that He could provide us with the ultimate support to avoid sinning. His character grew and matured on Earth while He was surrounded by sin. This experience enabled Jesus to clearly understand how to help our character grow and mature under the same circumstances. This is very important because our character is what we will take to Heaven and have throughout eternity. Never again will any person have the opportunity to develop their character while living in a sinful environment.  53
“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”  Luke 2:52
“Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;”  Hebrews 5:8-9
  • Our Creator came to Earth to take on our penalty of suffering and death for the sins that we have committed against God. He suffered more than any of us will ever suffer and He died so that we might have the opportunity to be restored and live with Him in Heaven forever.  54
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  Hebrews 12:2
  • Jesus came to show that God is the most loving and merciful Father we could ever hope for.  55
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16
  • He came to reveal His power to heal our sins and our physical problems – He even raised people from the dead. His many examples of healing are meant to provide us with solid faith in His power to raise us from the dead and restore us to life once again. All of Jesus’ followers can look forward to the day when we will be in Heaven; where there will be no sickness and no death.  56
“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”  John 11:25
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”  Revelation 21:4
On the night of Jesus’ arrest, one of His professed followers named Judas (who was a traitor and in reality a follower of Lucifer) led the local religious leaders to Jesus’ location in the Garden of Gethsemane in exchange for a small amount of money. The Garden of Gethsemane is located next to the city of Jerusalem. Jesus was secretly arrested by a group of men who came with their swords and heavy sticks. Jesus could have easily escaped by asking His angels to protect Him, but instead He followed through with His plan to rescue us and continued to take our penalty of suffering and death. Jesus was given a cruel and unfair trial which included the use of false witnesses. During His trial, his persecutors mocked Him by placing a crown of thorns upon His head and by many other unmentionable acts of cruelty. He was sentenced to death for the crime of blasphemy – for saying that He was God.  57
And so our Creator and the One who loves us more than any other person was sentenced to die by His own countrymen – His friends that He had created and came to Earth to save. God’s rescue plan will destroy sin forever, but there will always be a reminder of how much this plan cost. In the future there will be some people in Heaven who have still not heard the story you are reading – we are told in the Bible that they will meet the Son of God and will ask, “what are these wounds in your hands?” and Jesus will answer, “these are the wounds that I was given in the house of my friends.”  58
Jesus was put to death at a place called Calvary on a Friday, the sixth day of the week. His precious hands that touched and comforted thousands of suffering people were nailed to a wood cross by Roman soldiers. His feet that had traveled mile after mile to relieve suffering were nailed to the cross. His side was pierced with a spear to confirm that He had died. When His side was pierced, a stream of water and of blood came from His side – this was witnessed by John, one of His closest followers. He was confirmed to be dead by the Roman centurion who was in charge of his punishment and reported to Pontius Pilate, the Governor of Judea. But the most painful experience for Jesus was being separated from the love of His Father as He endured the punishment that we deserve. Jesus died of a broken heart as He suffered for the sins of you and me. And while Jesus was suffering, His Father in Heaven was suffering as a father suffers for his only son who is being tortured and killed – and yet God the Father allowed this to happen to His own Son so that you might be saved. This extreme level of love is hard to describe and understand.  59
At the cross where Jesus died, we can learn many things. Most importantly, we can learn of the incredible love that God has for each one of us. We can also learn of the terrible penalty for sin as well as the eternal nature of God’s holy law. If God could change His perfect and holy law, then He certainly would have changed it to keep His own Son from dying. However, His law is unchangeable because it is perfect and it is a reflection of the perfect character of God.  60
At the cross we can also learn of the hatred that Lucifer has for God and each one of His followers. Which side are you following today?  61
Jesus was carefully removed from the cross. His lifeless body was wrapped in fine linen along with about 100 pounds of myrrh and aloes that was donated by a man named Nicodemus. Then His body was placed in a new tomb that had been carved out of rock in a nearby hillside. This tomb was donated by a man named Joseph of Arimathaea so that Jesus would have a proper place to be buried. After He was placed in the tomb, a great stone was rolled in front of the doorway.  62
On the seventh day, Sabbath, as Jesus rested in the tomb where He was buried, some of the religious leaders were feeling anxious. They recalled that Jesus had previously stated that He would rise from the dead after three days. So, the religious leaders asked Pontius Pilate to secure Jesus’ tomb and place a Roman guard around it until the end of the first day of the week. Their request was granted – a seal was placed on the stone that covered the entrance to the tomb and a Roman guard stood watch to make sure that none of His followers took Jesus’ body from the tomb and then claimed that He had risen from the dead.  63
Early Sunday morning, the first day of the week, a great earthquake occurred as an angel came from Heaven and rolled back the stone that was sealing that tomb. Then the angel sat on top of the stone. The angel’s face appeared as lightning and his clothing was white as snow. The Roman guard became so afraid that they were shaking with fear and became like men who were dead. Jesus was then raised from death to life by the power of God. His resurrection from the dead can give each one of us confidence that God’s power to create and recreate life will be used to give us life again when Jesus comes the second time as a King, with all of His angels, to take us home to Heaven. Jesus’ death and resurrection is symbolized by the ceremony of baptism. As Jesus was raised from death to life, so each new believer in Jesus is buried in water to symbolize their death to sin and then raised up out of the water to symbolize their new life that is guided by Jesus and made possible through His power.  64
Some of the Roman guard then went back into Jerusalem. They told the religious leaders all that had happened at Jesus’ resurrection. The religious leaders decided to bribe the Roman guard with a large sum of money so that they would say that while they were sleeping on duty, Jesus’ followers came and took Him out of the tomb. As with many stories that are quickly made up by guilty people, this story does not make logical sense because the Roman guard would not have known who took Jesus’ body from the tomb if they had been sleeping.  65
After Jesus was raised to life, He returned to Heaven to obtain His Father’s acceptance that His suffering and death would satisfy the penalty for our sins. Following the acceptance that Jesus received from God the Father, He returned to Earth for 40 days to encourage His followers before He returned to His home in Heaven.  66
After Jesus’ resurrection, God raised many other people from the dead. Those people went to the city of Jerusalem and appeared to many people. Jesus was seen by at least 500 people after He was raised to life – some of these people were followers of Jesus and some were not. The personal care that Jesus has for His followers is made clear by the meetings Jesus arranged after His resurrection. Following are three examples: Simon Peter, Mary Magdalene, and Cleopas.  67
Simon Peter was one of the more outspoken followers of Jesus. Peter was a fisherman from the town of Bethsaida and was asked by Jesus to follow Him. Peter was privileged to travel with Jesus for three years. He saw Jesus heal people with leprosy, heal his mother-in-law, give sight to those who were blind, miraculously create food for more than five thousand families, instantly calm a raging storm and raise Lazarus from the dead. He stated before Jesus’ followers that Jesus was in fact the Son of God. Peter loved Jesus, but he didn’t realize that if his own life was put in danger, he would deny that he even knew Jesus. We may also think that we will be courageous and faithful when we are forced to stand up for what is right, but it is only by the power of God that we will remain faithful under trial.  68
When Jesus was being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter attempted to defend Jesus with his sword. He cut off the ear of Malchus, the servant of one of the religious leaders. Jesus healed Malchus’ ear and told Peter to put his sword away. He explained again to Peter that His kingdom was not on this Earth and that He had come here to fulfill the prophecies in the Bible. As Jesus allowed Himself to be arrested, all of the followers of Jesus ran away to save themselves. Later, Peter positioned himself outside of the high priest’s palace in Jerusalem so that he could listen to the trial of Jesus. As Peter was listening to the trial, three different people accused him of being a follower of Jesus, and each time he denied that he was. He stated that he didn’t even know Jesus. After Peter’s last denial he left the high priest’s palace and went out into the night and was very sorry for what he had done. He repented and asked for forgiveness for denying Jesus. It is encouraging to read in the Bible about an angel who instructed the women who came to the tomb to “go tell the other followers and Peter” to meet Jesus in Galilee. Jesus loves and cares about each one of us and He will never leave us or forget us. He loves us even when we make a serious mistake; even when we deny that we know Him. Jesus asks us to repent of our sins and be forgiven so that we can live with Him forever in His kingdom.  69
Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus’ most supportive and devoted followers. After the Sabbath had passed and early in the morning hours of the first day of the week, Mary was one of the first people to go to where Jesus had been buried. When Mary arrived at Jesus’ tomb, an angel told her to not be afraid. The angel said that Jesus was no longer there because He had risen from the dead. Mary had a difficult time believing the angel’s words and thought that someone must have taken Jesus’ body out of the tomb. This was a very emotional and sad time for Mary as it would have been for any of us. She remained not far from the tomb crying because she did not know where Jesus had been taken. Then Jesus appeared to Mary, but she did not recognize Him yet. Jesus asked her, “Why are you crying? And who are you looking for?” Mary thought that Jesus was the gardener and replied, “Sir, if you have taken Him away, please tell me where you have laid him and I will go and take Him away.” Then Jesus made Himself known to Mary as He called her by name. Mary was overwhelmed with joy as she was reunited with her Master. Jesus had just risen from the dead and yet He waited to encourage Mary, one of His faithful followers, before He traveled to Heaven to be reunited with God the Father and the many thousands upon thousands of holy angels.  70
Sunday afternoon as Cleopas and another follower of Jesus were walking the eight miles from Jerusalem to their home in the town of Emmaus, they talked about the recent events that had happened to Jesus. They were very sad as they reviewed Jesus’ trial and death. They had expected Jesus to reign as their king on this Earth and instead He was put to death. As they walked home, they were joined by a fellow traveler. Through a miracle, Jesus kept these two followers from recognizing Him so that they could focus on His encouraging words to them. Jesus took the time to review the prophecies of the Bible that explained in advance what His life and death would be like.  71
Just as you are now reading and understanding the gospel message, Jesus taught Cleopas and his friend the gospel as they walked along the road to Emmaus. He helped them to understand that His followers would be joining Him in His Heavenly kingdom where there will be no sin and where all citizens of His kingdom will live in peace with each other. When they reached Emmaus, Jesus’ followers invited Him to stay with them for the night. Jesus accepted their invitation. As they sat down to eat their evening meal, Jesus asked for God’s blessing on their food and then He allowed His followers to see who He really was. Then Jesus disappeared from their sight and even though it was beginning to get dark outside, the two excited followers ran all the way back to Jerusalem to tell His other followers what had happened and what He had said to them.  72
At the conclusion of Jesus’ time here on Earth, He met with His followers on a mountain in Bethany in the district of Galilee. Jesus had one last encouraging conversation with His followers. He told them that all power was now given to Him in Heaven and in Earth since He had successfully completed the central part of the plan to rescue every sinner who wants to be set free from the destruction of sin. He instructed His followers to take action and go teach every person in all nations about the good news of the gospel. And when a person decides to follow Jesus, He instructed that they should be baptized in water in the name of God the Father, and Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We should also teach every follower to observe the commandments that Jesus taught. His final thought was to reassure His followers that He would be with them until the end of this world.  73
When Jesus’ time on this Earth was finished, He ascended up into a cloud as His followers watched. And while His followers were still looking up into the sky for one last glimpse of their Master, two angels appeared to them and asked them why they were standing there looking up into heaven. The angels then explained that Jesus would come back to Earth later in the very same way that He left. The words of the angels were similar to a previous conversation Jesus had with His followers when He said, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” Once Jesus’ followers understood that He would come back to take them home to live with Him forever, they rejoiced and were very glad. What a day of rejoicing that will be for Jesus’ followers when He returns to take them home! Do you have the assurance today that Jesus will be taking you home to Heaven when He returns? I hope you do, but if you need further specific information about how you can have this assurance, you will find these details in the next two sections.  74

“For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:2-12

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:” I Peter 2:21-23

And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” Daniel 9:24-27

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.” John 10:14-18

But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: and for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.” Matthew 28:1-4

“Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, and said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; and not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.” John 11:1-53

Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,” John 18:10-12

“And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.” Matthew 26:51-56

“But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.” Matthew 26:58

“Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.” Matthew 26:69-75

“And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.” Luke 22:31-34

“And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.” Mark 16:4-7

“And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.” Matthew 28:5-8

“But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, and seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.” John 20:11-18

“And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.” Luke 24:13-21

“And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.” Revelation 21:23-27

“And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,” Luke 24:28-33
